Washington DC 5-Alarm Fire
March 12, 2008

On March 12th, 2008, firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire in a five-story apartment building in northwest Washington D.C. Despite the efforts of over 75 firefighters, the fire continued to spread to the upper floors of the structure. Emergency crews attempted to evacuate the residents as quickly as possible; however, the rapidly spreading blaze trapped several residents and firefighters. Over 200 residents were displaced and area roadways were closed as a result of the fire. Embers from the structure fire sparked a second fire in a nearby church, forcing firefighters to call a five-alarm response. Additional emergency personnel arrived on the scene to assist with the firefight. After almost 12 hours on-scene, fire crews were able to achieve full containment. In spite of the severity of the fire and the number of those trapped, no major injuries were reported.

NC4 issued the initial alert at 22:00 PDT, over 30 minutes before being covered on major network news. A total of twelve alerts were issued as the incident began as a minor two-alarm fire and escalated to a severe five-alarm fire.
