Hurricane Ike
September 1-16, 2008
Hurricane Ike became the ninth storm of the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the second storm to reach a Category 4 status. The storm originated off the western coast of Africa and moved west, passing just north of Haiti and through Cuba before tracking north and making landfall on Galveston Island, Texas on September 13th. Ike forced mass evacuations in the United States as well as Cuba. Despite the severity of the storm and evacuation orders, several residents in the Galveston area remained in place. A total of ninety-six people were killed in the United States, seventy-four in Haiti, seven in Cuba, and one in the Dominican Republic. Hundreds more remain missing. By the end, Ike became the third costliest hurricane in United States history.
NC4 monitored the storm as it neared the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 4 storm until it dissipated over central United States. A total of eighty-four alerts were issued and almost 100 Ike related incidents were reported. A Special Event was opened that contained all the storm-related incidents, an outage/restoration map, track map of the storm, and the latest weather advisories.
