Benazir Bhutto Assassination

Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated by two unidentified assailants following a rally for the Pakistan Peoples Party in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The attack occurred as her motorcade was leaving the area after Bhutto addressed her supporters. The former premier was standing through the sunroof of her vehicle when a gunman fired three shots at her and an accomplice detonated explosives that were attached to his body. Approximately twenty-four people were killed and several others were injured. Benazir Bhutto suffered fatal injuries and was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Supporters across Pakistan reacted violently to the news of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. Violent civil unrest was reported in several major cities in Pakistan, including Rawalpindi, Karachi, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Lahore and Larkana. As a result of the rioting, at least fifty people were killed, 250 cars were burned, and over 300 structures were damaged.
